Ford Motor Co. shared fresh details Tuesday night of its future 30-acre, $740 million Detroit campus that centers on a redeveloped Michigan Central Station, including plans for several new buildings and an open, walkable landscape that incorporates design suggestions from nearby residents.

'There’s a lot going on and a lot of pieces that connect,' Mary Culler, Ford’s Detroit development director, said in an interview.

The automaker and its landscaping and design partners presented the details during a virtual Michigan Central community meeting.

The Detroit campus' centerpiece is the formerly empty train station, 2001 15th St. in Corktown, which Ford purchased in 2018 and is redeveloping as primarily workspace for its mobility team employees. Restoration of the 1913 station encountered some minor delays because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but is still expected to be complete by late 2022.

The pandemic has not changed the scale of Ford's plans for the train station and surrounding campus or the number of workers expected to occupy the campus, Culler said. In total, the campus is to have 5,000 workers — 2,500 Ford employees and 2,500 other workers.

The project's total $740 million anticipated cost also hasn't changed, she said. The automaker has secured nearly $240 million in local and state tax breaks for renovating the train station and building the new Detroit campus.

The campus site plan was developed by the New York-based firm Practice for Architecture and Urbanism following an 18-month process that Ford says involved more than 100 hours of discussions with nearby residents and key city stakeholders.

Vishaan Chakrabarti, the firm's founder, said he and his staff attended meetings and listened to what residents wanted to see.

“The community asked for public open space,' Chakrabarti said in a phone interview. 'They wanted to make sure that parking structures and other structures didn’t block the view of the train station. They wanted to make sure that we didn’t approach the train station as having a front and a back, and so there’s really this 360-degree idea to the train station.” 21aw authird grade james tes.

These latest details include:

• The abandoned, elevated railroad tracks at the rear of the train station will become a 'mobility platform' for use by Ford and its partners as testing and showcasing grounds for new technology, such as autonomous vehicles and e-bikes.
• A public greenway for pedestrians and bicyclists, to be managed by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, will be built behind the elevated tracks next to the mobility platform. Groundbreaking for the greenway could happen next year, and the nearby Vernor Highway underpass could be updated and widened to be more pedestrian-friendly.
• A new parking garage and 'mobility hub' will be built at 14th and Bagley streets and be called the Bagley Parking Hub. This building will feature a unique architectural design and be a waypoint on the greenway's expansion to the future 22-acre Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park on the west riverfront.
• Redevelopment of the old Detroit Public Schools Book Depository, located near 14th Street and Michigan Avenue and near the train station, will begin in the first quarter of 2021 and also feature unique interior designs.

Bagley Parking Hub

The Bagley Parking Hub will have 1,250 parking spots for Michigan Central workers and be available for public parking during evenings and weekends.

It will have a pedestrian-oriented streetscape and multiple public amenities, such as restrooms, outdoor seating, drinking fountains, outdoor plazas and free Wi-Fi. Construction is to start in the first quarter of 2021 and finish in early 2022.

'We really see it as more than a parking deck,' Culler said. “We didn’t want to have parking attached to the train station or the book depository because it’s a mobility innovation district, and you’re going to get an opportunity to participate in the new inventions around mobility.”

The Albert Kahn-designed schoolbook depository, also known as the Roosevelt Warehouse, was notoriously abandoned after a 1987 fire and later sold to the late trucking and real estate magnate Manuel 'Matty' Moroun.

The coming renovations will add a new entrance and a central, four-story atrium that would fill the building with sunlight. Architectural firm Gensler is behind the reimagined design. When the building opens in early 2022, it will house Ford employees and various tenants who would use the building as co-working space.

The Detroit campus could also potentially include two additional buildings: the West Building, which would be built just west of Michigan Central and across Vernor Highway, and a nearby West Parking Hub. The West Building, if built, could provide additional office space for Ford and its partner companies.
